Benoni Northerns Indians Ball Club is becoming a home base of national talent

A number of players/coaches are in national set-ups.

If the sheer number of baseball players and coaches selected for the national South African Baseball Union’s age group sides for the respective u-15 or u-23 2018 World Cups or national elite training squads (ETS) are anything to go by, then it is evident that Benoni Northerns Indians Ball Club is one of the top feeder clubs in the country.

The following players/coaches from Indians have been selected into national age group squads:

• National u-12 elite training squad: Luke Emmett, Connor Steyn, Jean-Pierre Samouilhan, Caelum Stroberg, Dennis Mclintock, Michael McLintock and Jarryd Gordon-Watt.

• National u-15 squad to participate in the u-15 World Cup 2018 in Panama: Kyle Schwartz, Kyle Weideman, Alex Levkov, Nicholas de Ascenansao, Matthew Lugg, Joshua Murray, Adam Landman and Shawn Schwartz (assistant coach).

• National u-18 elite training squad: Kian Schwartz and Corbin Greenslade.

• National u-23 squad to participate in the u-23 World Cup 2018 in Nicaragua: Rowan Ebersohn, Tyler Croft, Bradleigh Peeters, Brenton Faulds and Richard Greenslade (assistant coach).

• National senior elite training squad for the incoming tour against France: Rowan Ebersohn, Brandon Bullion and Tyler Croft.

The club also held junior and senior prize-giving ceremonies recently for the summerball season.

The Benoni Northerns Indians Ball Club’s Major A side, coached by Grant Sayers, had an extremely successful 2017/2018 season.

The youngest member of the Major A side Anthony Sayers represented South Africa in the u-18 World Cup side that toured Canada in September last year.

Club umpire Brendon Burrows was nominated to umpire at the u-15 World Cup in Panama, while Major A scorer Marcel Burrows passed her Level Three scoring exam with flying colours.

The Major A team is currently playing winterball.

On the softball front, the 2017/2018 season was a successful one for the Indians’ women’s sides.

The club had two teams in the Major Women’s Division, both which played competitively throughout the season.

The Rascals team made it to the semi-finals.

“We believe the continued passion and dedication of the players will see that the 2018/2019 season will be a promising and successful one with the idea to expand and grow the sport of softball within the club,” said softball chairperson Natasha Ebersohn.
