This year, we get to party with the man who made the hit Cold Shoulder one to dance to.

Lonehill Estate not to be missed

Yuvir Pillay, better known by his stage name Sketchy Bongo, is just trying to let you know … that if you are not going to The Festival then you are going down the wrong road.

Pillay is one of the most prominent music producers and DJs in South Africa at the moment.

He has several hits getting major play on South African and international television and radio.

Having recently signed to mega dance label, Ultra Music in New York, he has gained substantial international exposure from his single with Shekhinah, Let You Know.

Sketchy Bongo also has hit singles with Aewon Wolf, Locnville, Shekhinah, Kyle Deutch, Danny K, Nasty C, Tresor, Jimmy Nevis and AKA among others.

Sketchy released his debut album Unmasked which has done exceptionally well on digital charts.

He is also the only producer in South Africa to have his own feature on MTV Base, which play-listed all tracks produced by him.

The 27-year-old started Djaying by playing his own songs in Durban clubs after event organiser and club DJ George Kretsos offered him a spot in his line-up in 2012.

However, the composer did not just start his career a few years ago, but was producing beats and making hip-hop music with long-time friend Arnold “Aewon Wolf” Phillips and Slikour of Skwatta Kamp, since he was 13 years old.

Fast forward a decade later, he began uploading videos and songs to YouTube and SoundCloud, which garnered thousands of hits online.

Although he is what the music industry could deem as famous, the mask is a way for him to shy away from the spotlight.

He explained that the masked persona he has now become recognised for was born impulsively before a video shoot.

“Sketchy Bongo never had a ski mask,” he said.

“Sheen Skaiz, who I work with, was shooting a music video for a song he made.

“He had a ski mask in the car and I put it on as a prop and that became Sketchy Bongo.”

The artist said he is focused on art and business.
