Streets become a hive of runners during the 2018 Robor Scaffolding Marathon

There was plenty of fun on the run.

The 2018 Robor Scaffolding Marathon organised by Benoni Northerns Athletic Club (BNAC) on April 29 was, by all accounts, a successful event.

Like last year, a spectacular and vivid April sunrise welcomed visitors to Benoni on the morning.

WATCH, scenes from the start:

The road race which saw runners and walkers take to the streets in either the 5km fun run, 10km, 21.1km (half-marathon), 42.2km (full marathon) and 50km ultra marathon distances attracted 3 384 participants.

The 5km fun run attracted 400 participants, 890 took on the 10km, 927 ran the 21.1km, 772 ran the 42.2km and 395 ran the 50km race.

Race organiser Jan Jordaan said: “I always make a point of it to ask the runners if they enjoyed the race, if the marshals and water tables were good, 100 per cent of them said they were happy with it.

“I didn’t get one negative response from them, so I think all-in-all it went extremely well.

“I have said it many times in the past, this club is unbelievable, we have got such competent people here, you won’t believe it.”

He praised the community members who supported and cheered on the runners and walkers on the route.

“The community is getting used to this and becoming more aware of the race.”

On the competitive side of things, in the 50km ultra race, it was Malose Mabote of Rainbow Athletic Club who stormed in with a quick time of three hours, 13 minutes and 33 seconds.

Mabote won the 2017 version of the 50km race as well.

He was followed by Randburg’s Simon Maake (three hours, 19 minutes and 18 seconds) and Irene’s Samuel Molefe (three hours, 20 minutes and 43 seconds).

In the women’s 50km field it was a familiar face who claimed top honours.

Born 2 Run’s Salomé Cooper clocked in at the finish line at three hours and 38 minutes and was followed in much later by Alta Kruger of Krugersdorp (four hours, 18 minutes and five seconds) and Julanie Basson of Born 2 Run in third place with a time of four hours, 18 minutes and 51 seconds.

In the full marathon, it was Entsika’s Edwin Khonkhobe who tasted the joy of victory.

Khonkhobe ran his race in two hours, 29 minutes and 17 seconds to finish top of the pile.

He was followed in second position by Benoni Harriers Athletic Club’s Benjamin Skosana (two hours, 34 minutes and 42 seconds) and in third position by Sam Bolo of Rockies.

Janine Rawlinson of Wanderers was the first woman across the line in the 42km marathon.

She came in at three hours, 13 minutes and 54 seconds, followed by Massmart’s Nandi Zaloumis (three hours, 18 minutes and 51 seconds) and Jenni Krus (three hours, 18 minutes and 52 seconds).

In the 21.1km half-marathon, it was Siyabonga Mabena of Daveyton Hearts who finished first.

Mabena ran the race in one hour, 12 minutes and 13 seconds closely followed in by André Venter of Alberton (one hour, 12 minutes and 17 seconds) and Nkosi Skosana of Anglo (one hour, 13 minutes and 31 seconds).

Makoma Batji of Run Walk for Life was the first woman finisher of the 21.1km race in one hour, 29 minutes and 47 seconds, Bongiwe Simelane, representing the City of Ekurhuleni, finished second in a time of one hour, 35 minutes and 53 seconds followed by Claudia Figueira of Jeppe (one hour, 37 minutes and 46 seconds).

In the shorter, but blitz-quick 10km race Benoni Harriers’ exciting junior team stole the show.

They cashed in on their hometown advantage to ensure a full podium of Harriers in the open men’s 10km.

Evans Malepe of Harriers was the first man home with a time of 33 minutes and 49 seconds, while Siphisihle Hlomuka finished second with a time of 35 minutes and 23 seconds.

Tshepo Mahlangu rounded off the top three for the Benoni Country Club based Harriers with a finish time of 35 minutes and 55 seconds.

Evans Malepe of Benoni Harriers moves like a gazelle on the 10km route.

Chanté Dixon of KPMG was the first woman 10km finisher with a 40-minute time.

As media partners for a third year running, the Benoni City Times and Caxton Local Newspapers team was hard at work capturing images from the 2018 Robor Scaffolding Marathon held from Benoni Northerns Sports Club on April 29. These are a few snaps from the day.
