Six of the best for Old Bens at home against Kempton

What a day for Old Bens FC.

Coach Raymond Cloete was a happy man on April 21 when his Old Bens Eastern Local Football Association (ELFA) Super League team produced a stellar 6-1 winning performance at home against Kempton Park.

In fact, the coach dubbed it as “some of the best football I have ever seen Old Bens play”.

He had every reason to say that. Kempton Park is not a pushover team, but they just could not handle the Old Bens onslaught, particularly after the opening 20 minutes of the encounter.

“It could have gone either way in those opening minutes, but then it became one-way traffic in our favour,” said the coach.

Bens would go into the halftime break 5-0 up.

“We just happened to hit our straps and everything went 100 per cent in our favour.

“The shots were flying in and the guys played the match like it was their last match ever.

“It was like everything we had been working on in practice for the last two years came together.”

The second half was quieter with both teams finding the net.

Nkululeko “Shoes” Makhubo and Themba Vilakazi scored a hat-trick of goals apiece in the match, both scoring ‘world class’ goals on the day.

Although pleased with the progress of his team, Cloete is adamant that there is still a long way to go in the league.

“It is great to win like this, but it is still early and anything can happen in football.”

The Reserve team drew 3-3 in the preceding match.

There was initially Benoni Football Derbies set to be played this weekend, but a major fixture shuffle from the ELFA has seen that match rescheduled.

Old Bens will be playing Randburg under lights at Currin Park on the night of April 26.
