Man accused for murder remains behind bars

The accused was hospitalised after consuming pills.

Charles Barker (40) is expected to reappear in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court on May 25 on the charges of murder and attempted murder.

Barker appeared in court on April 17 for the murder of Andrianne Coke and attempted murder of Betinah Coke.

The case was postponed for further investigation.

The accused was arrested on March 5 after allegedly stabbing his fiancée (Betinah) and her daughter (Andrianne).

The City Times was told by police that Barker is 45 years old, however, his charge sheet stipulates he is 40.

The City Times previously reported that Benoni SAPS spokesperson Capt Nomsa Sekele said the man was hospitalised after being arrested near the East Rand Trader’s Square flea market, in North Rand Road, shortly after the incident.

Sekele said the man had swallowed pills.

The accused will remain in custody until his next appearance for the Kempston murder.
