Day of dominance ends in defeat for Northerns FC

It was a day that should have been different for Northerns.

Benoni Northerns Football Club (BNFC) hosted Olympia at Northern Areas on April 14 in the Eastern Local Football Association (ELFA) Super and Super Reserve leagues.

Coach Jannie van den Berg’s men went down 2-0 in a game that they really should have won.

BNFC dominated proceedings but still found themselves on the wrong end of the scoreline.

“It was not the best day as far as the score goes,” said the coach.

“We had so many chances, but couldn’t put them away.

“Our striker Kwanda Sokutu had about four one-on-one opportunities with their goalkeeper and couldn’t put the ball past him.

“On any other day, he would have scored at least two of those chances.”

Not only that, but his men also struck the post at least three times and couldn’t capitalise on a corner kick count that was in their favour.

“We had 22 corners on the day and could not convert one,” added van den Berg.

“It was frustrating at the time, but in hindsight, we definitely did play well.

“Their two goals came from the only two shots they had all game.

“Their one goal came after our centre backs collided with each other while the other was a bit of a hoof from just inside our half that our keeper should have done better with.”

“We will pick it up in training this week.”

They’ll need to up their game when they travel to Germiston on April 21.

In the preceding match, Darren Lee’s Reserve XI maintained an impressive start to their campaign with a 1-0 victory.
