Housing allocation said to be behind Daveyton protest

Are you affected?

A protest over housing is said to be behind roads in Daveyton being barricaded last night and this morning (April 16).

Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) spokesperson Themba Gadebe said the EMPD has been in the area since last night to monitor the situation.

“It is the intention of the City to engage the protestors.

“We can identify them; they are backyard dwellers who we have been engaging with a number of times.”

He said the leadership of the protestors will be engaged.

A Daveyton resident told the City Times some Daveyton residents are unhappy about the allocation of RDP housing.

She said community members of Wattville and Kingsway are receiving housing instead of those who already live in Daveyton.

This claim could not be confirmed with Gadebe at the time of publishing.
