Opening day defeats for Benoni Northerns Rugby Club sides

It was not a winning weekend for the Benoni rugby sides.

Benoni Northerns Rugby Club’s first and second sides played their first league matches of the season and were hoping to give it gas when they locked horns with Sasolburg in the Valke Merlin League on Saturday.

The second side was on the wrong end of a 57-3 defeat while the first XV put up a good fight despite going down 8-17.

In the second side’s clash, the Benonians opened the scoring with a penalty from Chandre Holmes and held that on until the end of the first half.

After some apparently controversial calls from the referee, the floodgates opened and the team ended up getting thrashed 3-57.

The Benoni first team had a good game, but couldn’t get the win.

The first half score was 10-3 in favour of Sasolburg, Juandre Botha scoring the three points.

In the second half, both sides scored a try apiece with Benoni’s Stephan Smith crossing the try line.

His try was unconverted.

Benoni had a chance to kick a penalty to at least get a bonus point for losing within seven points, but missed the attempt.

They will play their first home match of the season at Northern Areas on April 14 when they host Nigel Rugby Club.

The second team kicks-off at 2.40pm while the first side plays at 4pm.

Spectators are encouraged to show their support for the Benoni teams.
