All over South Africa, there is a feeling of having been left desolate and forlorn.

Her turbulent life was a profile of courage.

Prone to adversity, she fought fire with fire.

Winnie will live on in the hearts of millions forever.

LETTER: Korsman Bird Sanctuary could put Benoni on global map

The shining beacon who illuminated our rainbow nation, and indeed Africa – amidst darkness and sorrow – has suddenly gone out.

The liberator of South Africa and the emancipator of the masses has left the nation in a political vacuum.

History will record and posterity will attest that Winnie was the ultimate warrior, who embraced human warmth which stands out most prominently in her character.

Her death will serve to remind generations of our people of a generous and fearless personality, and of a life of nobility and patriotism, service and sacrifice.

Here is a sad occasion when one can say truthfully that Africa is now poorer. It is poorer not merely because a great political colossus of this era has died, but because her death leaves a massive hole in the lives of her multitude of friends and on the ramparts of our nation.

Hamba Kahla, Mama Winnie.
