UPDATE: Aiden is so close to breathing on his own

Airfield resident, Aiden da Silva (6) has almost reached his R1-million goal.

The da Silva family is awestruck by the outpour of love, care and funds received from the community for young Aiden (6), who needs about R1-million for his operations in Switzerland.

Since the article which was published by the City Times in March, Aiden’s mother Jade said they received about R640 000 and are in need of about R319 927 more.

The family brought the financial situation to the City Times’ attention after a medical report was sent to them from doctors in Switzerland who watched videos of Aiden’s scope.

Jade and her husband Mario resorted to advice from the doctors in Switzerland after learning that no doctor in South Africa has performed the operations to Aiden’s complexity.

The report received said Aiden has a severe degree of supraglottic stenosis (this is part of the airway that is above the vocal cords) and a moderate degree of laryngeal stenosis.

The six-year-old has a prosthetic airway which in turn gives him swallowing complications.

He also has difficulty in speaking so it makes it hard for people to understand what he says, and he is fed through a peg (feeding tube) due to his epiglottis being lame.

“Aiden needs to go to Switzerland to see a specialised airway ENT surgeon, who can help open up [his] airway, which will help him breathe on his own and have a better voice,” Jade explained.

Jade said monies were raised through fund-raisers by CrossFit Urban Shack, Funders Hill and Ashton colleges.

Another fund-raiser will be held on April 28.

“We can pay the deposit next week (second week of April) when all the monies have cleared,” Jade said.

In the previous article, Jade said a deposit of R521 110 is needed.

Aiden’s first procedure will be on May 7, the main procedure on May 8 and a follow-up procedure on May 14.

The three procedures are laser surgery to safeguard maximum of the vital vocal cords and other airway structures, endoscopic surgery to open the supraglottis and an additional open surgery to widen the airway.
