The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) has extended the operating hours of 29 clinics in the city.
This is to broaden access to healthcare services for the residents of Ekurhuleni.
EMM spokesperson Themba Gabede said not everyone can take a day off work to visit a clinic.
“The provision of extended service hours is part of the city’s strategy to reduce the burden of long waiting times at clinics and to improve access to primary healthcare,” said Gadebe.
“Five more clinics are earmarked in future to be added to those that operate for 24 hours and 12 hours a day.”
He said construction of an additional 10 state-of-the-art healthcare facilities is already in the planning phase to increase accessibility.
There are 94 primary healthcare facilities in Ekurhuleni.
The services offered at the 24-hour and 12-hour facilities include child healthcare services, immunisation, and maternal health, management of acute and chronic illnesses, mental health services as well as HIV counselling and testing.
These extended hour facilities also render allied health services such as rehabilitation services and dental health and maternity services where there is a Midwife Obstetric Unit on site.
These Benoni facilities will have extended hours:
• Daveyton Main Community Day Centre. Extended to 24 hours.
• Phillip Moyo Community Health Centre. Extended to 24 hours.
• Mary Moodley Memorial Clinic. Extended to 12 hours.
• Barcelona Clinic will now operate on Saturday from 8am until 2pm.
• Emaphupheni Clinic will now operate on Saturday from 8am until 2pm.
