Benoni Library well supported

The library has had an on-going partnership with the Friends of the Benoni Library for about 15 years.

The Benoni Library celebrated South African Library Week from March 19 to 25, under the theme ‘Heart of the Community’.

The library celebrated with a display of paintings and drawings from children who showcased what the library means to them.

“You can’t replace books,” said librarian Cheryl Eaton.

“Books are forever. You can’t always rely on the internet.”

She said there are many advantages to reading and people are not always aware of this.

“The funds they raise from book bashes helps us because we get newer books into the library,” said Eaton.

Friends of the Benoni Library committee member Ann Smith said they rely on donations from the public to get more books.

“We wouldn’t be doing this for 15 years if it wasn’t important for both adults and children to read,” she said.

According to Eaton, more people are signing up to take books out and they are able to take two new books each month.

Eaton said people have responded well to the new selection of books in the children’s and the adult sections.

“The new books have gotten more children to come to the library,” said Eaton.
