Book club is changing lives one page at a time

Making a difference through reading.

The Daveyton Book Club continues to empower young people through reading.

The club recently received a special award under the education, training and skills development category at the Premier’s Youth Excellence and Service Awards ceremony.

The ceremony was held on March 10 at the St George Hotel and Conference Centre in Centurion.

It is held to honour the youth of Gauteng who are making a difference and who are contributing to the province’s growth and development.

Kwandile Sikhosana is the co-founder and chairperson of the Daveyton Book Club and said receiving the award means that their work is being recognised.

“The award has affirmed that your environment doesn’t dictate how far you’re able to go and it has also fuelled me to continue the work we do at the club,” said Sikhosana.

“We can only get bigger and better from here; we’ve recently received a huge number of African literature books from well-known people and estates.”

Gauteng premier David Makhura said there is nothing as urgent as giving hope to young people and that no other government has paid so much attention to the issues of young people.

“We are dedicating these resources to create opportunities for young people,” said Makhura.

The Daveyton Book Club is an organisation that seeks to address illiteracy by establishing mini-libraries and book clubs for disadvantaged communities through partnerships with community developers across the country.

The organisation hosts various campaigns, from feeding the homeless and clothing street kids, to providing free basic project management training, computer skills and entrepreneurship.

The Daveyton resident said the club has launched its 13th book club in the country.

“We are currently working to establish a few libraries in the Northern Cape and one at a disadvantaged school in Daveyton.

Sikhosana is working on establishing resource centres in the Benoni area in partnership with Kids Haven.

“Kids Haven has been generous enough to offer us the space to create a resource centre, which will be the key to addressing township development during the fourth industrial revolution,” he said.

“By next year they hope to have more than 500 book clubs across South Africa and to have started building their resource centre.”
