Police: Benoni High learner offers phone, but is punched in the face

The criminal left empty-handed.

A matric learner at Benoni High School was punched outside the school’s premises yesterday, police say.

The incident happened at about 3pm.

Benoni SAPS spokesperson Capt Nomsa Sekele said the learner told police she was approached by a man who demanded money.

“When she said she did not have money, she offered to give her phone to him, but the guy refused and said he wanted money,” said Sekele.

The spokesperson said the criminal punched the matric learner and kicked her after throwing her to the floor.

Sekele said the man left empty-handed.

Principal of Benoni High School, Eugene Rooyakkers, confirmed the incident.

He said although the incident happened outside the school’s premises, he takes the attack personally.

Rooyakkers said the school will implement better measures to protect its learners off the premises.

A case of assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm was opened.

No arrest has been made.
