Healthy pet makes a happy owner

Pug Rescue SA held its monthly fund-raiser which focused on the health and well-being of animals.

Various stalls featured on March 10, and members of the public were educated on how to take care of their animals.

Dr Tanya Grantham, the owner of Animal Health and Hydro Benoni, did a demonstration on animal acupuncture.

“This helps with pain management and muscle spasms and it improves blood flow,” she said.

Grantham did the demonstration on Fergie, one of the rescues at Pug Rescue.

The veterinarian said the procedure takes about 15 to 20 minutes and the dog needs to go for one treatment a week for four weeks.

Guests could also have their dogs microchipped on the day.

Dr Bernie Eales, from The Avenue Veterinary Hospital, had a tent set up where she conducted microchipping.

“Microchipping is used to positively identify your dog should it get lost or stolen,” said Cheryl Gaw of Pug Rescue SA.

“The microchip tells you who the dog belongs to according to who it is registered under.”

Eales said the chip is as big as a grain of rice.

It is inserted behind the neck, under the skin, with a needle.

“It’s put there because there is less movement in that area,” she said.

Any registered veterinarian can do microchipping at a cost of R280 to R400.

Both Dr Grantham and Dr Eales do pro bono work for Pug Rescue through their Thanda Inja community outreach programme.
