EMPD satellite office to aid Kingsway, surrounding communities

It should benefit neighbouring communities too.

Ward 73 residents now have an EMPD satellite office situated in Kingsway.

The satellite office was opened on February 1 and it is headed by the acting commander, Supt Pamela Buthelezi.

Residents of Kingsway, Lindelani, Alliance, MacKenzie Park, New Modder, Rynsoord, Apex and Msholozi informal settlement will benefit from the satellite, which will be responsible for by-law enforcement, crime prevention and policing.

Ward 73 Clr Sinethemba Matiwane said since he took office in 2016, he made it his priority to fight for services to deliver to the people he serves in his ward and make the area safer for everyone.

“I am proud to have been part of bringing the EMPD satellite office to Kingsway and with it to renew hope of a safer community,” said Matiwane.

Matiwane said previously the satellite office was operating from the Benoni Precinct due to the lack of offices in Kingsway, which still need to be procured.

The councillor has offered his office in Kingsway for the EMPD to use temporarily.

“Some of the struggles the precinct have had, besides the office accommodation, is that the Kingsway satellite is operating with skeleton staff, consisting of a commander, six officers, 10 wardens and four patrol cars, which is not sufficient and was sourced from the Benoni Precinct, hampering service delivery to both precincts,” said Matiwane.

“However, I will continue to engage with the relevant stakeholders to ensure that change comes to the communities.”

The EMPD was contacted for comment but no response had been received at the time of going to print.
