Another Benoni pavement garden flourishes

Everything is for free.

Planting vegetables on pavements appears to be a growing trend in Benoni.

Doreen Henderson has for the past five years successfully planted vegetables on her pavement along Tassenberg Road, in Alphen Park.

She said her husband was not completely sold on the idea of the garden, which runs along Atlas Road.

“My husband gets very upset,” she joked.

“He said you can’t put water out there, but we do. I put the hosepipe out and water.”

Henderson plants seeds and seedlings in an area approximately 15m long by 15m wide.

The 76-year-old gardener does so not only for herself but for the benefit of anyone who would like to harvest her produce.

“They walk by and help themselves. They knock on the door or ring the bell and I say ‘Ja, help yourself’, and then they say, ‘Can I have a plastic bag?’”

The best compost in the world, you ask?

Henderson said that would be the soil that is pushed up by moles.
