Old Bens win the ELFA Top Eight competition
Old Bens get their hands on some early season silverware.
Coach Raymond Cloete and his Old Bens Football Club Senior Super League XI got their hands on the Eastern Local Football Association’s (ELFA) pre-season Top Eight competition trophy with a 3-2 victory over Luso Africa in the final on February 24.
The Benonians faced the daunting task of playing Luso at their Hatting Park home ground in Primrose, but rose to the occasion, particularly in the first half when they led 2-1 before the break, through some good play.
Sabelo Methule scored a brace of goals in the first stanza before Lesiba Modau scored the third to put Bens up 3-1 in the second period.
A goalkeeping error let Luso in with a sniff, but Bens held out to get the morale-boosting win.
The Top Eight competition serves as a curtain-raiser to the ELFA’s Super and Super Reserve leagues, which kick-off officially this weekend.
Cloete said: “To win the Top Eight is a great little booster for us before the big league starts.
“It was a nice warm-up competition and gave us a good opportunity to show the players where we want to be as a team.”
The coach said that he hopes his chargers can maintain the good work and dedication to training heading into the league campaign.
“We will push for a Top Five position in the league, but a Top Three finish would be terrific,” he said.
Old Bens will open their 2017 league season against Robertsham at Currin Park on March 3.
The reserve side will play at 1.45pm followed by the first XI at 3.30pm.
Spectators are encouraged to show their support at the grounds.
Meanwhile, Benoni Northerns Football Club’s Super League and Super League Reserves team will open their season with away day matches against Boksburg at the City Stadium on Saturday.
