Spirited Spurs lose in Kempton Park

The team put up a gutsy effort.

Actonville Spurs Cricket Club’s Premier League One XI faced a tough task when they travelled to Barnard Stadium to play Kempton Park on February 25.

Skipper Mekyle Pillay won the morning toss and decided to bat first.

His men put together a score of 195/5 in their 50-over innings, mostly thanks to the work of opening batsman Yusuf Bulbulia who top-scored with a relatively slow 69 runs from 136 deliveries.

Justin Brink, CJ van der Walt and Matthew Corin all got scores in the 30s.

In their reply with the willow it was Kempton’s two Wesleys (Coulentianos and Marshall) who proved difficult to get out.

The pair amassed a partnership of 127 runs before Coulentianos was removed with a score of 57 runs from 72 balls.

Marshall was eventually removed for 83 runs from 111 balls by young Wilber van Dyk with the score at 165/2.

Four more wickets would tumble for just 14 runs (van Dyk picking up two more wickets to achieve figures of 3/39 in his 10 overs), but Kempton had done enough to secure a four-wicket win within the 46th over.

“Unfortunately, the result did not go our way,” said Pillay.

“I am happy with the boys’ performances though.

“They showed great determination and fought right until the end.”

The captain will be hoping that his team can bounce back in the Benoni cricket derby against Benoni Northerns Cricket Club at Lords Cricket Grounds in Actonville on March 4.
