Illegal dumping on Lancaster Road creates concern

The street is the border between Wards 29 and 30.

“The non-removal of waste, illegal dumping and toilets in Pursad Street have been reported over and over again to the relevant departments,” Ismail said.

According to Ismail, before the new demarcation, the informal settlement beyond the border fell under her ward.

“As PR councillor of the ward in the previous term, I have submitted various petitions to the council,” Ismail said.

“[I requested] for appropriate or alternate housing accommodation for the residents of Home Seekers Informal Settlement.

“When the mobile toilets aren’t cleaned, residents can’t open their windows due to the terrible smell.

“Even vehicles that pass their have to wash their cars due to the odour.”

Ismail said Ward 29 residents who are ratepayers are forced to live in unhygienic circumstances and the living conditions have also decreased the value of their homes.

“The place is a mess,” she said.

“Residents are forced to live with interruption of electricity supply due to illegal electricity connections, rubbish everywhere on the road, water in the road due to running taps and a stench caused by water and rubbish that are mixed.”

The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) had not responded to the City Times at the time of publication.
