In October last year, the Benoni Country Club (BCC) launched the new Golf Development and Performance Academy with head teaching professional Rob van Velzen.
Van Velzen, who needs no introductions in local golfing circles, is heading up the redeveloped facility at BCC and is striving to attract more golfers, especially juniors and women, to the game and to the club.
The academy features new practice facilities with a full putting and chipping green available for those trying to improve their short game while the expanded BCC driving range has been busier than ever before.
Van Velzen also offers a fitment centre to cater to the specific clubs needs of the individual golfer.
He is also working on a programme with a few local schools and extends an invitation to schools to get involved.
Specific women’s clinics are also run by the academy.
“We can teach from grassroots levels and up,” said van Velzen.

“The academy is not just for the elite player.
“You don’t have to be a scratch golfer to play and enjoy the game.
“It’s a game for life regardless if you have a low handicap or not.”
The facility can also be used for team building and corporate functions.
Darren Millington, CEO of BCC, said that it has been a great pleasure to bring the experienced Van Velzen on board.
“The facilities are better than ever and we have great teachers on the range.”
He encouraged the community to embrace the new facility and improve their golf game.
