Rynfield woman recalls how Dr Snyders saved her life

The doctor postponed her holiday to operate on a patient.

A Rynfield woman owes her life to the tenacious efforts of the late Dr Elsabe Snyders.

Snyders died on February 14.

“We extend our deepest condolences to Dr Snyders’ family and loved ones on their loss, and trust that they will find strength in this time of great sadness to them,” said Ben Rood, general manager of Netcare Linmed Hospital.

“Dr Snyders started practising at the hospital as a surgeon in October 2007, and was passionate about her profession and her patients, whose well-being she cared for deeply.

“Dr Snyders’ expertise and experience earned her the respect of her colleagues and patients alike, and she will be sorely missed by all.”

The hospital would not share further details of the doctor’s passing.

Lulu Barnard of Rynfield said she was shocked when she heard the news of the physician’s death.

Barnard met Snyders on December 20, 2014, after she was referred to her by another doctor who suspected she had appendicitis.

Snyders noticed a growth in Barnard’s body and said she would postpone her holiday by a day so that she could operate to remove the growth.

“She saved my life,” said Barnard, adding that the growth was, in fact, the result of colon cancer.

“I said to her, ‘you’re my angel’.”

Barnard said another doctor may not have fought as hard to save her life.

She has been in remission for three years.
