Solid ‘victory’ for Actonville residents as 392m wall is set to be erected

Victory for Actonville residents as their request for a wall is granted.

The condition laid down by Actonville residents, that a wall be built before Harry Gwala residents are temporarily moved onto vacant land in the area, has been acceded to.

The request for the wall to be built was made following a public meeting at the Actonville Council Chambers on November 23.

Ward 29 Clr Haseena Ismail chaired the meeting where the head of the project, Fikile Ndlovu, responded to residents’ concerns about temporarily moving about 400 shacks from the Harry Gwala informal settlement to the vacant piece of land, which is near a bridge between Actonville and Wattville.

In February, Ismail forwarded an email from Ndlovu to the City Times, stating that the total length of the wall will be 329m, comprising 200m of brick wall and 129m of clear view fencing.

The height of the wall will be three metres.

The wall will be built from Waterberg to Drakensberg streets in Actonville.

“The project is a three-year plan to temporarily move residents from Harry Gwala to the vacant piece of land,” Ndlovu told residents at the meeting in November.

“During these three years, we will build on the land where residents were moved from in order to have a formal settlement at Harry Gwala.

“There is a R300-million budget for this project, so there should be no delays.”

Abdullah Cassim, an Actonville resident who lives near where the wall will be built, said it will provide a sense of security.

“It is a testament that when a community works together, all objectives and goals may be realised,” Cassim said.

“I want to applaud the councillor and all other members who made this possible.

“Together we are stronger, and hopefully this small victory has a positive impact on the generations to come.”
