LISTEN: Be a friend of history by getting involved at the Benoni Museum

Have you got ideas for the Benoni Museum?

The Benoni Museum is asking community members to become a friend of the museum so that Ekurhuleni’s history can be preserved for future generations.

“Friends of the Museum are people who play a vital role in supporting museum activities,” said research officer at the museum, Mpume Gamede.

Gamede said during the early years of the establishment of the museum, a group of people supported the activities of the museum which ensured a stable relationship between the community and the museum.

“On December 2 a meeting was held which indicated that the community is interested in the heritage of the Ekurhuleni region,” Gamede explained.

In preserving the heritage of Ekurhuleni through the museum, Gamede hopes that future generations will know about the importance of a museum.

“They will know more about the establishment and development of Benoni, history of mining, the Ekurhuleni Municipality and diverse cultures of Benoni,” she said.

“The senior citizens who will be part of the initiative will share/pass down the knowledge to the young generation of Benoni.”
