WATCH: Bringing a new twist to the rap culture

Daveyton artist creates new music genre

Creating a new genre of music has allowed Kholofelo Mashilo, known as Mochene, to redefine himself as an artist.

Mashilo, a Daveyton resident, released his 12-track Chantrap EP in December.

Rapping in Sepedi and English has led to him to classify himself as a Chantrap artist, combining chant music with rap.

“I call it voices of the fallen kings, echoes of the mountains,” said Mashilo.

Because he writes from his experiences, Mochene’s music has become a form of therapy not only for himself but for others too.

“I have found that through my music, I can change people’s lives,” he said.

“I write a lot about pain because people can relate and people hide pain very well.”

By telling his truth, his family has become more loving.

The rapper hopes to show the world that there is more to the Pedi culture than what people think.

“I would like to be one of the guys who show that there is such a music style or genre that exists,” he said.

He prides himself on having an identity and advises other artists to do the same.

“Stay original, but don’t be naive to trends.”

Working with his producer B-MA has allowed him to hone his distinct sound.

“If it doesn’t sound new, we don’t release it,” said Mochene.

Mochene said images, social media, the events you attend and the relationships you have with people all shape the type of artist you are.

Describing himself as competitive, he aims to grow and establish himself in the international market.

“The world is waiting and ready for something different,” he said.

Starting out in 2008, he recorded his first song in his bedroom with a group of friends.

He released a solo project in 2011 called Red Tape under management company Knucklehead.

In 2012 he released his second project called Fortune Over Fame, featuring AB Fab and Gemini.

Known as Dizzy Man-Ape at the time, Mochene felt overshadowed and decided to reinvent himself and head in a different direction in 2015.

This led to his being chosen as one of the opening acts of Cassper Nyovest’s Fill Up Orlando Stadium in 2016.

“This increased my passion and dedication and I realised I can do anything I set my mind to,” said Mochene.

The rapper is already working on his next project.
