Guider Mandy Payze said The Teddies are aged four to seven and the Brownies are aged between seven and 10 years old.

“Right now I have six Brownies, one of them is borderline Teddie, but she is just as capable as the rest,” she said.

The Brownies reopened after it had to close after guider René Watts immigrated to Australia.

Payze then decided to take over the portfolio.

“I was a Brownie when I was little and I just decided I just want to give back, and that is what Girl Guides is all about,” she said.

She believes it is beneficial for young girls to be a part of Girl Guides because it teaches them independence.

“We empower girls, we give girls even more life skills than they learn at school in terms of how to stand on their own two feet,” she said.

She encouraged parents to get involved as it helps their daughters grow because parents know their children better than anyone else.

Payze said many parents are involved with teaching the younglings different skills.

She explained one of the club’s clauses entailed the girls had to learn to drape a sari and one mother taught it to the girls how to do it.

One mom presented a Zumba class, which is a fitness dance class and another volunteer taught the girls about meditation.

“The meditation is about the importance of connecting with yourself,” said Payze.

She also said they schedule self-defense classes.

“We try to expose them to issues they are likely to encounter,” she said.

She also explained the young girls will have basic survival skills.

The clubs will meet every Monday evening at 5.30pm to 7pm at their Blue Forest Office in Van Rooyen Street, Morehill.
