Seven bodies of suspected illegal miners were found on January 14, about 500m from Daveyton Road.

Lt Col Mack Mngomezulu, spokesperson for the SAPS Ekurhuleni Central Cluster, said at about 8.30pm on Thursday, January 18, family members of one of the deceased miners were performing a ritual near the N12 informal settlement.

Maj-Gen Poobalan Subbiah, commander of the police’s Ekurhuleni Central Cluster, said the women were shot in a shack while they were praying.

“The two suspects approached the females directly, without speaking to anyone, [and] shot five of the females in the head and fled the scene,” said Mngomezulu.

“[The] suspects used pistols to kill the victims.

“Four of the females died on the scene. The fifth female was rushed to hospital with gunshot wounds.”

The EMPD is working with the SAPS to investigate the 11 murders.
