The secret to nine distinctions is a balanced life

MacKenzie Park resident and proud learner of nine distinctions, Abdullah Hassan, from Benoni Muslim School (BMS), advises current learners to use their strengths to their advantage.

The 18-year-old attained distinctions in English, Afrikaans, Arabic, accounting, business studies, life orientation, mathematics, physical science and advanced program mathematics (completed independently from BMS).

The results filled Hassan with joy, relief, excitement, shock as well as the outburst of joy and screams from his family.

“The secret to my achievements is extreme studying, persistence and endless encouragement from my mother (Fayheema Hassan),” the youngster said.

“I completed the syllabus for most of my subjects in January and spent the rest of the year studying past papers.

“I would memorize 40 past papers before an exam but I always maintained a balance in my lifestyle.”

Hassan said he intends to study a Bachelors of Economic Science at the University of Witwatersrand.

“The course appeals to my strengths in mathematics, science, economics, business and accounting,” he said.

“I am passionate about problem-solving and lateral thinking.

“I love the concept of delving into the unknown and solving complex problems using mathematical methods, therefore, this course shall stimulate those passions.”

Although he was successful in attaining nine distinctions, it did not come easily to the lad.

“The lack of available facilities and several family obligations were major challenges,” he said.

“Some of the biggest challenges were maintaining a balance in life, remaining motivated and persistent.

“I had [not] traveled [during] the holidays nor gone out with friends.”

Hassan said his biggest challenge was studying a minimum of six hours daily.

“I was fortunate enough to have had the support of my mother,” he said.

“She provided the study resources to the best of her ability.”

Although Hassan dedicated his time to studying, to have a balanced lifestyle he exercised, created art and read on a set daily schedule.

“I set daily goals and would not sleep until I achieved them,” Hassan said.

Hassan said to learners that intelligence is neither set nor clearly defined.

“True success is integrating your gift with your passion and hard work is always rewarded,” he said.

Principal of BMS, Gaffar Muniff, said the staff and himself are proud of Hassan’s acievements.

“Abdullah has been a hard-working and consistant worker throughout his scholarship career at BMS,” he said.

“He has done the school proud, BMS congratulates [him] and wishes him everything of the best for the future.”
