Local clubs end first half with wins

Both local Eastern Premier League teams (Actonville Spurs and Benoni Northerns cricket clubs) were victorious in their final league matches of 2017 on Sunday, December 3.

With the first half of fixtures now complete, the 2017/18 club cricket season breaks for the December holidays and will resume again on the weekend of January 13.

Actonville, who suffered defeat at the hands of Duduza the weekend prior, convincingly returned to winning ways with a 116-run victory over Springs Old Boys at Lords Cricket Grounds in Actonville on Sunday.

Opening batsman Ahmed Salojee was the star of the show, scoring 117 runs from 146 deliveries (14 fours and a six) as his team put a score of 247/7 on the board in their 50-over batting innings.

CJ van der Walt (43 runs from 68 balls) backed Salojee up well with the bat.

With the ball, the experienced arm of Clayton August (3/24 in seven overs) did most of the damage for the hosts as they wrapped up their guests for 124 all out in 45 overs.

Benoni Northerns Cricket Club (BNCC) travelled to Prince George Park in Boksburg and were made to work hard for their three-wicket win against a young Boksburg outfit.

Batting first, Boksburg completed their 50 overs with a score of 195/8.

For Benoni, WP Myburgh, Stefano di Bartolomeo and Stefan Jordaan each bagged a brace of wickets.

Last year’s league runners-up, BNCC struggled with the bat, apart from young Aron Visser, who showed tremendous maturity with a score of 60 not out to guide the visitors home with a total of 196/7 in 46.3 overs.
