Benoni Country Club scoops major EGU awards

The Ekurhuleni Golf Union (EGU) held its 2017 EGU Awards at the Benoni Country Club (BCC) on November 24.

The awards are held in conjunction with the President’s Dinner where the president of the EGU, Martin Saaiman hosted a dinner to thank the clubs within the union for the past year and to honour golfers, individuals and clubs who have had great success throughout the year.

BCC ruled the roost after what was, according to Darren Millington, CEO of BCC, “an awesome year”.

Deon Becker took the award for the Best Course Superintendent /Greenkeeper in Ekurhuleni for 2017 for the magnificent

condition that the course is in while the Club CEO of the Year Award for 2017 went to Millington.

The club also took top honours with the award for Best Ekurhuleni Golf Course for 2017.

Millington congratulated all the other award winners in the various categories.

“There are some really knowledgeable people within the EGU and it is great to see all these individuals achieving,” he said.

“I would like to thank my team, the course and clubhouse staff as well as the great committee at BCC for the amazing achievements we have earned this year.

“As we look forward to another year in the club industry, I am sure that Benoni Country Club will continue to serve as ‘Home to Benoni’s Community’.”

Golf Course of the Year: Benoni Country Club

Club Committee Member of the Year: Steve Schultz (The Lake Club Benoni)

Club Executive Member of the Year: Jakes Jacobs (Avion Park Golf Club)

Club Captain of the Year: Nick Alberts (ERPM Golf Club)

Club Employee/Member of the Year: Jack Turton (ERPM Golf Club)

Club Member of the Year: Candice Rowles (The Lake Club Benoni)

Waitress of the Year: Mathaphelo ‘Smiley’ Maloka (Germiston Golf Club)

Barman of the Year: Keith Thembachako (ERPM Golf Club)

Caddie Master of the Year: Freddy Mtshali (Ebotse Links)

Ekurhuleni Player of the Year: Kyle McClatchie (Serengeti)

Ekurhuleni Senior Player of the Year: Jan Delport (State Mines Country Club)

Club CEO/Manager of the Year: Darren Millington (Benoni Country Club)

Best Course Superintendent/Greenkeeper of the Year: Deon Becker (Benoni Country Club).
