UPDATE: Kids Haven’s Caleb still chases his dreams

Since the City Times reported on Kids Haven resident Caleb Mutombo’s (20) dream of becoming a bodybuilder, the youngster has been aiming for even greater heights.

“I am training and hope to enter the Arnold Classic Africa competition next year and win in the u-23 division,” Mutombo said.

“I have finished my personal trainer course, hoping to get results soon.”

Mutombo, who still lives at Kids Haven, was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) with sickle-cell disease (SCD), the most common type of which is known as sickle-cell anaemia (SCA).

As a result, Mutombo has physical disabilities which affect his legs, arms, shoulders and hands.

But this did not stop the lad from dreaming big and striving to make those dreams a reality.

“I am doing another personal training course next year and want to study cyber security,” he said.

“I am hoping to do my driver’s licence.”

Before Mutombo could make his dream of personal training a reality, he trained at the Kids Haven gym until he met Ryan Manthe, co-owner of Trinergy Health and Fitness, who read the City Times article about Mutombo and wanted to help.

“I was inspired by Caleb’s passion for bodybuilding, so I got in touch with Kids Haven to meet Caleb,” Manthe said when speaking to the City Times in 2016.

Manthe offered Mutombo an unlimited membership at the gym, which he still uses.

Manthe also sponsored a personal trainer course from Trifocus Fitness Academy.

Although Mutombo has made progress, he still faces several challenges.

“At this point my cyber security fees would be at R21 700. I am uncertain where I will get the money from, but I will make a plan,” he said.

Mutombo is grateful for the exposure and opportunities he has received so far, including his interviews with news agencies like the BBC and CNN.
