50 going on to forever

Frank Sinatra sang: “... And if we go someplace to dance, I know that there’s a chance.”

To some people, an introduction like this won’t make sense, but to Airfield residents Rina (68) and Jimmy Young (72), the song, Something Stupid, was the start to a beautiful marriage which they’re still celebrating 50 years later.

The couple heard the song on their second date and both fell in love with the song as they did with each other.

“Love each other, have a sense of touch in your marriage by constantly hugging and holding each other,” were the words of the Youngs who celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on November 4.

The start to something new, Jimmy and Rina Young on their wedding day.

The Airfield couple moved to Benoni 33 years ago and consider themselves privileged to have their children and grandchildren in the same area.

“My friend wanted me to meet Jimmy, but I could not until he got my father’s permission to see me,” said Rina, who reminisced about their love story.

“Jimmy came home and asked my father for permission to take me to a dance and since that day, he saw me every single day except the night of his bachelor’s party.”

Jimmy said the moment he saw Rina stand at the door of her house, he knew she was the woman he wanted to marry.

However, their marriage was not always rainbows and roses; the couple said marriage requires work, but as long as love is present, it is worth it.

“We believe in Jesus and if He is a part of our relationship, then we will be fine,” Rina said.

“We need to be examples to our children and grandchildren.”

Jimmy said that troubles did arise like finances and illnesses, but the two stood together.

As a couple, they did not use the word “divorce” in their marriage.

“He tells me every day that he loves me, the longer we have been married, the more I fall in love with him,” she said.

Jimmy said Rina’s eyes, loving and friendly personality attracted him to her.

The couple advised newlyweds or those who are considering marriage to appreciate each other and appreciate the time spent together.

“Never forget to say I love you,” Rina said.
