Family asks questions after skeletal findings

Western Cape resident Jeanine Joubert saw an article in which the City Times reported that skeletal remains were found at the Korsman Bird Sanctuary in Lakefield on August 10, 2014, by a security company.

Joubert’s aunt, Yvonne Klopper, went missing on March 23, 2013, and she believes the remains could be that of Klopper.

“I know she liked that area. I can’t remember the name of the dam, but she and her family used to go to a dam in the [Korsman Bird Sanctuary] area,” she said.

“I have been in contact with the police, but I haven’t heard anything back in a while.”

She said her family needs closure and “everybody is sort of holding on to false hope”.

Whayne Erasmus, Joubert’s cousin, said he also believes it could be his aunt.

He explained that a series of events could have led to her being at the wrong place at the wrong time.

He did not want to elaborate on the matter.

Chairperson of the Korsman Conservancy, Jane Trembath, said the security company that found the remains has since been dissolved.

She also said people have been asking her if they found out who the remains belonged to.

Trembath investigated the area and believes “it is quite likely that the body or skeleton came down in the Victoria Avenue stormwater drain from the railway line”.

She said the stormwater drain is about 1m wide and she said there is an open culvert in the railway area which leads into it.

“Perhaps someone fell out of or off a train, or a body was dumped there,” she speculated.

The City Times is waiting for a response from the Benoni SAPS to locate the investigating officer who handled the case.
