She said three permanent homes have been found, two of which are on private plots and another on a golf course.
Forrest-Smith said the park’s bunnies, which she estimates do not exceed 1 000 in number, should be rehomed within the next few weeks, after the municipality approved adoption requests.
She said five people will be responsible for sexing the rabbits, an idea presented to her by the City Times, which was thought of by community member Stephen Rehbock.
The sexed animals will then be sent to the locations and should ensure that breeding won’t take place.
It will also mean no further cost needs to be incurred for sterilising the animals.
Hannetjie Meyburgh, of Mapleton in Boksburg, said she will take in as many of the animals as needed.
The animal lover said the additional animals will be added to a property that already has a number of horses, donkeys, dogs and… eight rabbits.
She said they receive discarded vegetables from a nearby farm.
Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) spokesperson Themba Gadebe said the municipality is still committed to sterilising up to 1 000 rabbits.
He said 145 still need to be done to achieve that figure.
