Child Welfare improving financially, but still in deficit

The Greater Benoni Child Welfare (GBCW) director, Elsie Labuschagne, said the society is suffering a deficit of about R50 000 per month.

The GBCW had their annual general meeting on September 28.

According to Labuschagne, the society renders services to 1 347 foster families in Daveyton and Benoni, and Colin House (Northmead) is home to 20 children between the ages of two and 15.

She said the society receives a 66 per cent subsidy from the Department of Social Development.

Colin House receives R765 848 per year in total from the department and this is calculated as R148 808 for social worker salaries per year and R8.53 per child per day.

The house mothers and the rest of the personnel are paid with a portion of the children’s funds.

For the rest of the funds needed to keep the GBCW functioning, the society is reliant on donations, fund-raisers and the charity shop.

“The charity shop brings in almost R160 000 per year,” she said.

The 2016/17 AGM financial report by treasurer Kerry Coats indicates that the deficit is R37 000 less than the previous year.

Factors affecting the GBCW’s 2016/17 income are:

• A ladies tea had an income of R9 000 of which R6 457 was profit.

• A cupcake project yielded a profit of R5 647.

• Fund-raising income decreased from R84 502 to R71 227.

• Donations increased from R295 304 to R373 940.

• The charity shop’s profit decreased by three per cent but is contributing R160 000 per year to the society nonetheless.

These are the society’s biggest expenses:

• Staff salaries were raised due to an increase in the subsidy from the Department of Social Development.

• The Daveyton and Benoni offices, as well as Colin House, needs extensive physical repairs.

• The computer and office equipment was replaced in Benoni and Daveyton to improve service delivery.

• The GBCW bought a trailer.

• An electrical system was installed at Colin House.
