Benoni SAPS spokesperson Const Zama Madonda said the elderly woman was inside the store when she was approached by a young female who told her to put her bracelet in her handbag as she might be robbed of it.

“The woman did as the young lady said,” said Madonda.

“Suddenly, the young woman grabbed the woman’s bag and quickly went out of the shop.”

Madonda said people must be vigilant when shopping and must report suspicious people, behaviour or situations to mall security.

“Be careful of scams where strangers stand in passageways and offer you discounts on goods found in shops.”

Lakeside Mall could not confirm the incident at the time of publishing.

Shoppers have been warned

The Benoni SAPS, EMPD and the Pink Ladies organisation held a crime awareness campaign ahead of the festive season at Lakeside Mall on September 29.

This was to share safety and security information with shoppers.

Shoppers were also given an opportunity to interact with those present and received tips to reduce their chances of falling victim to certain crimes.
