Locals swim, cycle and run at 11Global Sun City triathlon

In the past Benoni Northerns Athletic Club (BNAC) would only send about six of their members to triathlon events.

Fast-forward to the weekend of October 14 and October 15 when 22 BNAC members (eight novices) turned up at the start of the 11Global Sun City triathlon to test themselves and embrace a new challenge at the North West resort.

Long distance road running is normally the lifeblood of the club, but some members decided to step out of their comfort zones to give triathlons a go.

They did not do themselves any injustices.

Four BNAC members found themselves on the podium at Sun City after Sunday’s Olympic distance event comprising a 1.5km dam swim, 40km cycle and 10km run.

BNAC’s Claudia Else took top spot in her age group in the women’s category for 25 to 29-year-olds.

Mark Dingle, an Ironman African Championship finisher in April, finished third in the men’s category for 30 to 34-year-olds.

Lauren Fisher, the first female finisher from the club at this year’s Comrades Marathon, proved she is more than just an accomplished road runner by earning third place on the female novice podium.

Alan Argall, also of BNAC, achieved third place in the men’s 60 years and over age group.

Many other locals, not affiliated to the club, also competed and performed well at Sun City.
