The Robeys steal the show

Rynfield residents Sheila-Ann and Mark Robey woke up as a dating couple and before long they were married in a flash - no jokes; they were dating, engaged and married in a space of four days.

“I woke up on Wednesday as a girlfriend, slept as an engaged woman and on Saturday I was married,” is how Sheila-Ann described her sudden wedding.

The wedding came as a result of the couple being chosen for a reality TV show called Married In A Flash which aired on SABC 3 on October 11.

The show gives winning couples R75 000 and three days to plan their wedding, then tie the knot on the fourth day.

The Robeys were told about being chosen on September 13 and were married by September 16.

But the wedding was not the only unusual event in the couples life, their meeting was too.

“It was love at first swipe,” is how Sheila-Ann described her relationship with Mark who she met on Tinder (online dating platform) in 2014.

Sheila-Ann, who lived in Pretoria until her move to Benoni in 2016, said they ‘met’ on the application in November 2014.

“We made contact on Tinder on November 12 and were supposed to meet in person the next day, but Mark was too drunk – he ditched me,” Sheila-Ann said.

“We then made plans to meet on November 15, but I was annoyed by him ditching me, so I ditched him.”

However, the new bride had a change of heart on November 16 and met Mark at the Benoni Northerns Sports Club to watch a cricket match.

“After the game, Sheila stayed for the fines meeting which I loved,” Mark said.

“After that, we spent a lot of time together and she eventually moved in with me in 2016.”

Sheila-Ann said her knight in shining armour makes her laugh.

“He is so pure at heart and we just make a perfect match,” Sheila-Ann said.

Mark intended to propose to the love of his life in December this year, but life had other plans for the lovebirds.

“We entered for Married In A Flash and sent our final audition at the end of August,” Sheila-Ann said.

“On September 12 we signed the participant agreement.”

Mark and Sheila-Ann woke up on September 13 and went about their usual day; Mark is a sports administrator and coach at St Benedict’s College in Bedfordview and Sheila-Ann is a financial advisor for Liberty.

“The camera crew pitched up at work to tell me the news,” Mark said.

“Our time to plan the wedding started from that day.”

The Robeys had their wedding at The Mask Guesthouse in Benoni which was attended by about 125 guests.

“We received things needed for the venue for free,” the couple said.

“Friends and family, including our moms, took leave; our community was power.”

Charlotte Spirydonoa, Sheila-Ann’s spiritual teacher, officiated at the wedding and got everyone present to sing the words ‘for we are magical people’ to the tune of ‘for he’s a jolly good fellow’.

“It was perfect, great flowers, food and fairies, even the crew joined in on the fun,” Sheila-Ann said.

“For our honeymoon we hope to go to Greece someday.”
