Power outages a costly inconvenience

Ward 24 Clr Kabelo Mahonko said the municipality is working on fixing power outages in her ward.

“These power outages are a result of cable theft,” Mahonko said.

“The department of energy and authorities within the municipality are working towards relocating these cables.”

No date has been given as yet for the final relocation of these exposed cables but according to Mahonko the process is in the pipeline.

Cloverdene resident of 14 years, Wendy Parente, said the relocation of the cables is the beginning of a breakthrough in the area.

“Although it is getting better, it has been frustrating,” Parente explained.

“Residents have to leave the area to visit relatives in order to have a bath.”

Parente also made mention of a baker in the area whose business suffers when the electricity is cut.

“All the cakes get ruined because sometimes the electricity is off for three days at a time,” she explained.

Apart from the relocation of the cables to improve Cloverdene, Mahonko said the metro is also working on improving the Crystal Park area by providing a new substation.

“The substation will be given to Crystal Park to fund the new developments,” Mahonko said.

A public meeting will be held for Ward 24 residents later in October to query any unresolved issues regarding the substation and power outages.

If residents experience any problems in Ward 24, they can contact the Ekurhuleni Customer Care Centre on 0860 543 000.
