Make your pledge with a Santa shoe box

As the festive season approaches, the spirit of giving will be a prominent feature in our homes, at our workplaces and within our community.

Farrarmere resident Margie Kostelac is the regional manager of the Santa Shoebox Project in Gauteng.

Kostelac describes the project as an on-going project that runs throughout the year.

According to Kostelac, the project started in Cape Town and she has been part of it for about ten years.

“The uniqueness of the project is that you are bonding with a child and teaching others the joy of giving,” she said.

“I just love it. Seeing all the kid’s faces makes me so happy,” she said.

Kostelac has about 16 teams reporting to her with five being from Gauteng.

The projects operate in Joburg East, Joburg South, Krugersdorp, Tshwane and Joburg flagship.

The theme for this year is “a pledge is a promise”.

Pledges began on September 1 where individuals and companies have begun pledging.

There are two ways that one can pledge. The first way is going to the website and registering your details as an individual pledge or you can register your details as a team pledge which can be a family or a company.

According to Kostelac, an individual can only pledge 20 boxes at a time where are a team can pledge 50 boxes at a time.

Kostelac said: “There is no limit to the number of boxes you want to pledge.”

Before a team or individual can pledge they have to answer a few questions and choose the gender and age of the child that they would like to make a box for.

In the box, there need to be eight specific items that consist of a toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, an item of clothing, stationery (pens, pencils crayons etc), sweets and a toy (age appropriate).

These items should be put in an average sized shoe box that is wrapped or decorated with the lid decorated or wrapped separately.

The box should also have the child’s name, age and gender.

“People are allowed to add more than one of each item in the box. It’s completely up to them,” said Kostelac.

Drop off dates are: October 27 from 8 am to 6 pm.

October 28 from 8 am to 4 pm.

October 29 from 8.30 am to 1 pm.

The drop-off place for Joburg East is 269 Fleming Road, Meadowdale Germiston.
