Police issue warning to motorists using the N12

Following several crimes occurring on the N12 behind the Daveyton Railway Station, police have asked motorists to be more vigilant.

Daveyton SAPS spokesperson, Capt Mesh Makole said the N12, between the Putfontein and Daveyton off-ramps, is becoming a hotspot for criminal activities, which include murder, attempted murder and hijackings.

This came after a case of attempted murder was opened at the Daveyton SAPS on September 7.

Makole said it is alleged that a 38-year-old man was driving a company truck with two of his colleagues on the N12 on their way to Emalahleni, Mpumalanga.

“When he was approaching the railway station he noticed a body lying across the road,” said Makole.

“When he slowed down two men suddenly came to the truck, pulled him out and assaulted him.”

Two of the people got into the truck and when they realised they couldn’t drive it, they ordered the man to show them how to drive it.

“When the victim tried to drive away, one of the suspects shot him in the right leg,” Makole said.

“He drove the three men to Delmas.”

His colleagues were not wounded and the vehicle was not taken.

No arrests were made.

In a separate incident on August 29 at about 6.30pm, a man was robbed and shot behind the Daveyton Railway Station.

Makole said the man and his co-workers were dropped off on the N12 behind the railway station.

“As they were walking near an open veld, about 10 armed men approached them,” said Makole.

“The men threatened them, robbed them of their belongings and instructed them to run.”

Makole added that, as the men were running, a gunshot was fired and one of them was shot in his upper body.

The 31-year-old man was declared dead at the scene by paramedics.

The suspects fled and no arrests have yet been made.

A case of murder and robbery was opened at the Daveyton SAPS.

He urged motorists to avoid stopping their vehicles when they see something suspicious and to also avoid picking up hitchhikers.

Makole said motorists who need to stop for whatever reason, should try to do so in built-up areas, especially at night.
