Book club plants fruit trees to commemorate Arbor Week

In their drive to uplift and develop the community, the Daveyton Book Club has planted 140 fruit trees in 35 schools around Ekurhuleni.

This is their way of increasing food security at disadvantaged schools.

The club recently hosted an Arbor Week conference on September 7 at the O R Tambo Cultural Precinct, in Wattville.

The event was in partnership with the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and the Ekurhuleni Environmental and Waste Management Department.

Learners from Dawn Park Primary School, Ekukanyeni Primary School, Magalegase Primary School and Kids Haven were in attendance.

Sarah Madingwana, co-founder of the Daveyton Book Club, said the conference intended to teach learners about the environment and discuss opportunities how they could be ambassadors.

On the day, different speakers shared their views about the importance of taking care of our environment.

The club aims to plant 170 trees during the month of September.
