Three houses damaged in Rynfield fire

A fire which broke out at Boatlake Village in Rynfield this afternoon (August 31) left a house and sections of two other houses burnt.

“It seems as if the fire spread from the reeds because of the strong winds,” said spokesperson of the Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Services, William Ntladi.
“One house has completely burnt down because the roof of the house was thatch,” said Ntladi.
According to Ntladi, three people were treated after the three houses burnt on Sani Street in Boatlake Village.
“We were notified about it around 2.28pm,” Ntladi added.
“But CMS was first on scene.”
Bond Behrmann, who lived in the house that completely burnt down, said she lived in the home all her life.
“My mother Bev Behrmann and I lived here, it is where I grew up,” she said.
“I am in shock of what happened. We are going to live with my grandparents and that is all we know for now.”
According to Behrmann, she received a call from her neighbour at about 2pm to say the roof of the lapa was on fire.
“When I got here, there were already two fire trucks here,” she said.
“I am grateful that nobody was home and nobody got hurt.”
The owner of the second house that was partially burned was not on scene, however, her neighbour, Kirby van der Stelt, was helping to hose the fire at the house.
“The owner was at home when the fire started and decided to go to hospital,” van der Stelt said.
“My neighbour contacted me and I could not get hold of my mother so I came home.”
The lawn and hosepipe on van der Stelt’s residence was also burnt.
“Our windows were shattered too because of the heat.”
According to Behrmann, the fire department was on scene but could not find a nearby water source so had to leave the premises to refill the trucks.
“This is correct, but that has to do with the water department,” Ntladi added.
