Many hands make light work at Korsman

The Westdene Haven has recently seen “special” visits from Goliath heron, black crake and black-winged stilts, according to Jane Trembath, chairperson of the Korsman Conservancy.

“In big game parks, like Kruger, you have to be very patient and lucky to ever see the likes of Cape shovellers, Hottentot teals, white-faced ducks, spurwing geese, even black-headed heron,” de Beer said.

“At Korsman, these magnificent water birds – and so many other relatively rare species – are regularly seen right from The Drive’s roadside and the raised benches provided next to the fence.”

The wonder does not end there.

“Observing the many species of birds in the pan brings constant surprises, sometimes in the smallest of doses: the unexpected arrival of one of the few small marsh sandpipers seen at Korsman; the annual arrival of Little Stints who seem to love a stopover at Korsman after marathon flights from the North Pole; the black crake, which is always a surprise but welcome visitor; and those adorable little stints, with rapier-like bills and limbs that looks like stints – these are all species you’d struggle to see in any of major game reserves,” de Beer explains.

De Beer praised the Korsman Conservancy for their efforts at the site and urged fellow Benonians to pay a visit.

“For me, Korsman has become not only a place to take pictures and watch wildlife but also a site to find solace among the birds and nature: a place to lift the spirit,” he said.

“Take a drive there, and spend just a few minutes to unwind.

“Then compare it with our Bunny Park.

“You will thank God for Korsman.”
