#knowyourbenoni – Davies has never considered living anywhere but Benoni

Farrarmere resident Rees Davies (65) was born in Benoni and has never considered living anywhere else.

BCT: Tell us about your personal life.

RD: I have been happily married for 40 years to Lynn Beverley Davies, who teaches Grade One at Tom Newby School.

We have one daughter, Diane Lynn Dunn, who is married to David Edward Dunn.

They have two children, namely Bailey Clare Dunn (3) and Daniel Rees Dunn (four months).

BCT: Tell us about your life.

RD: I am a semi-retired teacher.

I now teach engineering, graphics and design for two days a week at the Kingdom Academy in Witfield, Boksburg.

My last eight years of full-time teaching were at Belvedere School in Farrarmere where I taught fitting and machining and engineering, graphics and design.

I began my teaching career at Benoni High School in 1977 by teaching industrial arts and history for two years.

Thereafter, I taught briefly at Athlone Boys’ High in Johannesburg before going into industry where I became a technical training manager at Unilever in Boksburg.

I returned to teaching in 1993 at Brakpan High School where I taught woodwork until I moved to Belvedere School.

BCT: Tell us about your work with the Memorable Order of Tim Hats (Moths)?

RD: I have been a member of the South African Legion of Military Veterans for 32 years.

The Legion is a registered welfare organisation dedicated to assisting military veterans.

I was inspired to join this organisation in 1985 by the late Sam Blackman, a Benoni resident who was a national president of the Legion.

Although I have held various positions with the Legion in Benoni and Gauteng, I am currently the chairperson of the Brakpan branch.

It is gratifying to be able to make a difference in the lives of ex-soldiers and their dependants.

BCT: What are your hobbies?

RD: My hobbies are woodwork and metalwork.

I am a member of the East Rand Woodworkers’ Association.

I enjoy playing the trumpet and play regularly at Remembrance Day parades and funerals for the Moths and SA Legion.

BCT: What are your plans?

RD: My plans are to do a bit of travelling.

My wife and I are going to visit friends in Sydney, Australia in September.

I also want to make lots of wooden toys and furniture for my grandchildren.
