The arrest took place on Atlas Road, on the N12 bridge, at about 4pm.
But the arrest was largely as a result of a tenacious CPF patroller, Alfie Koekemoer.
He told the City Times he was conducting a routine patrol in Western Extension when he saw four suspicious men in a silver Nissan Qashqai on the corner of Railway Avenue and Kimbolton Street.
He started following them on his motorbike but then had to break the chase, after his cellphone and radio batteries died.
But he knew he’d see the suspected criminals again.
He rode on his motorcycle to his Western Extension home and charged his devices for about 20 minutes.
While doing so, he notified the CPF of the vehicle’s description.
He was informed of the vehicle’s location on Tom Jones Street, near Fifth Avenue.
By this time, only three men were in the car, and after the car stopped at a filling station on Tom Jones Street, only the driver remained.
Soon, PHS, AfriForum, No Jack Vehicle Tracking and several other community members were giving chase, which eventually ended on Atlas Road.
Brig Johan Jacobs, Benoni SAPS commander, said a man was arrested in possession of a hijacked vehicle, a 9mm pistol and an AK47 and some ammunition.
The vehicle was positively linked to a Yeoville hijacking case.
Police are investigating the possibility that the vehicle may have been used in Benoni crimes.
Jacobs thanked all role players for their contribution to the arrest.
WO Rudi Sieberts, of the police’s Ekurhuleni Central Cluster, said the suspect is facing charges of possession of a hijacked vehicle, and the possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
