New parkrun will take place on a farm

Fitness fiends from Benoni and surrounding areas now have another nearby parkrun available when the new Bapsfontein parkrun launches on the morning of September 2, at 8am.

Running legend and co-founder of the parkrun concept in South Africa, Bruce Fordyce, will be a guest runner on the morning.

“We really hope to attract many runners, joggers and walkers from Benoni and surrounds as Bapsfontein and the farm are close to Benoni,” said Troskie Neethling, event director of the Bapsfontein parkrun.

“Many youngsters don’t know that Bapsfontein was the social destination many years ago – with dances held at the Bapsfontein Hotel every Friday and Saturday,” he added.

The organisers are striving to put the neighbouring agricultural area back on the map with this new event.

“We believe that the Bapsfontein parkrun is unique as it will be held on a farm that is home to sheep, chickens, turkeys and one rabbit.

“Participants will be able to stay on for breakfast or a cup of coffee or just relax in an old, old farm environment.

“Some parkruns allow participants to walk their dogs and this will also be allowed at the Bapsfontein parkrun.”

The Bapsfontein parkrun will be be held on the farm “Doringdraad” (formerly known as Bapsfontein Blues Event Plaas) some 3km outside of Bapsfontein, just off the R50 towards Pretoria.
