Benoni High pipe bands excel at SA Champs

Two out of the three Benoni High School Pipe Bands won the South African Pipe Band Championships at the 40-year anniversary of the competition on July 29, at Benoni High School.

With about 26 bands competing, the Benoni Novice Juvenile won the 2017 South African Pipe Band Championships.

The band also won the Champion of Champions in the Novice Juvenile Section.

Benoni McTalla won the 2017 South African Championship, as well as the Champion of Champions in the Grade Two section.

Bands came from as far as Durban and the Western Cape to participate in the competition, with Highland dancers also competing on the day.

Friends and family enjoyed a fun day out, and the day ended with a mass band performance where all the bands played three tunes together.

Other results included Jessica Mels, a Benoni High learner, winning the Junior South African Drum Major competition as well as the Champion of Champions for her section.

Terrance Mzyk, a former Benoni High learner, was the runner-up in the Junior South African Drum Major competition.

Deon Bester, a past Benoni High School learner, won the Senior South African Drum Major competition as well as the Champion of Champions for his section.

The Benoni High School Grade Four Band came third in the South African Championships for their section.
