Hoosen rides like the wind in Port Elizabeth

Lakefield’s Zafar Hoosen (27) enjoyed a thrilling debut on the Port Elizabeth superbike drag racing scene at the first and second rounds of the national series at the Aldo Scribante Circuit.

The reigning South African champion headed down to Port Elizabeth for the first time and made sure that his name won’t be forgotten on the drag racing circuit in the Windy City.

Hoosen proved why he has become “king of the quarter-mile” as he obliterated the record time at the PE Raceway with a personal best time of 8.821 seconds, reaching a top speed of 254.2km/h.

Earlier this year Hoosen told the City Times that he wants to race the best of the best around the country to see where he truly stands.

“When I arrived in Port Elizabeth on Friday, I headed straight to the track to get some practise sessions in,” he said.

“I was sceptical of the drag strip because of the much shorter braking zone than that which I am used to when I ride up in Johannesburg.

“Words cannot describe the limited braking space we had there, it was quite scary.

“Most of my concentration was centred on my braking.

“I was not too worried about the times.”

Hoosen added that it felt like he had an added turbocharger on his older, but trusted 2005 model Suzuki 1000cc (which he calls “Sharkey”), due to the lower altitude experienced down at the coast.

“It was like I had a different bike down there.”

He said that the day of Nationals went by quickly.

“With two rounds in one day there was a lot of tension on the bike and I was worried that she might overheat but she pulled through in the end.”

And pull through she did.

Hoosen stormed to victory in the SS and SB classes, won a challenge against the local competition and took home the prize of Fastest Overall Rider of the Day to ensure that his debut in the Eastern Cape will be long remembered.

His attention now turns to the next national event in September.
