Boy (12) inspired by mother’s illness
At the age of 12, Keagen Potgieter will embark on his first Mandela Day initiative.
But charity is not new to the Arbor Primary School prefect.
The Northmead resident has been a cupcake angel with Cupcakes 4 Kids with Cancer for a few years.
This year, he decided to expand his charity work.
On July 18, he will hand out over 70 blankets across several hospitals in Gauteng to children affected by cancer.
His mother, Annie, said Keagen received support from family and teachers at Arbor to help him reach his target of 67 blankets.
“Nelson Mandela said children are the future of our country,” he said, when asked why he is doing good.
“My mom has said to me that I need to be the change I want to see in the world.”
The youngster started charity work with Cupcakes 4 Kids as his mother has been suffering with leukaemia for many years.
He and his 15-year-old sister, Brittannie, are working towards collecting handbags and toiletries which will be given to underprivileged women on Women’s Day, on August 9.
